Expandable Graphite
Expandable graphite is a material with exceptional properties when heated—it greatly expands its volume. This makes it especially suitable as a flame retardant for various materials, typically for use in polyurethane foams. When heated, substances intercalated between the graphite layers rapidly escape, causing the layers to expand and thus increasing the graphite’s volume many times over. This creates a fluffy layer that smothers the flame or blocks the paths through which flames can spread, thereby extending the time needed to fight a fire. It also prevents the spread of toxic gases, resists temperature fluctuations, is inert to acids and oxidizing agents, has good lubricating properties, and possesses very good electrical and thermal conductivity.
We also offer dispersions containing this graphite, which in some cases enable easier application—for example, for use on textile fibers.
Typical product properties:
Expansion from 30 to 400 ml/g. As a rule, the smaller the particle size, the lower the graphite expansion.
Carbon content from 85 to 99.5%.
The typical pH of the expandable graphite we offer ranges from 5 to 9. However, we also offer Thermographite 25 E +180 HPH, which has a higher pH.
The usual starting temperature of the products is in the range of 180 – 220 °C. We offer products with a lower starting temperature, such as Thermographite 20 K +300 LST, which starts at 140 – 170 °C, but also products with a higher starting temperature above 230 °C—Thermographite 10 K +300 HST, and even with a starting temperature above 260 °C—Thermographite 20 K +300 HST 260. A higher starting temperature allows the product to be used in technologies with high processing temperatures, where a standard product might begin expanding too early.
